When people think about biodiversity conservation, attention naturally turns toward some of the world's great remaining ecosystems.

Tropical rainforests, coral reefs, wetlands, ancient forests and other species-rich landscapes contain an extraordinary amount of Earth's biological diversity. Protecting these places is essential, particularly where habitat loss threatens species found nowhere else.

But conservation does not take place only in distant wilderness.

It also happens within the landscapes people encounter every day.

A flowering meadow between agricultural fields can provide food for pollinating insects. An old hedgerow can offer nesting sites and connect otherwise isolated habitats. A garden planted with native species can provide resources for insects and birds. Restoring a pond can create habitat for amphibians, aquatic insects and microorganisms within a surprisingly small area.

None of these places replaces a large functioning ecosystem.

But each can contribute to a larger ecological network.

This is the idea behind the places Bhramari wants to create and support: carefully considered habitats that strengthen local biodiversity according to the ecological conditions of the landscape around them.

Some may be small.

Others may eventually become much larger.

What matters is not whether they all look alike.

What matters is whether they work.
