A Scientific Note on the Term “Biodiversity Hotspot”

n conservation science, biodiversity hotspot has a specific meaning.

The concept is used for regions that contain exceptionally high numbers of endemic plant species while having already lost a large proportion of their original natural vegetation. These globally recognized hotspots are therefore major priorities for conservation.

When Bhramari speaks about creating local Biodiversity Hotspots, we use the term more broadly to describe places where habitat is protected, improved or restored specifically to support local biological diversity.

We make this distinction deliberately.

Our local projects are not equivalent to the globally defined biodiversity hotspots of conservation science.

They are smaller contributions within the same larger objective:

maintaining the diversity of life and the ecological relationships that sustain it.
