From Individual Patterns to Collective Systems

Large systems often emerge from surprisingly small interactions.

A bee colony is not coordinated by one individual giving instructions. Collective behaviour develops through thousands of local interactions among workers. Bird flocks change direction through responses between neighbouring individuals. Ecological communities develop through countless interactions among organisms and their environments.

Systems science describes such phenomena as emergence: larger patterns arising from interactions among smaller components.

Human societies are far more complex, but emergence is present here as well.

Individual behaviours influence social norms. Social norms influence institutions. Institutions shape the conditions in which future decisions are made. Over time, repeated actions can become infrastructure, markets, traditions and expectations.

This is important when thinking about sustainability.

Personal choices matter, but they do not occur in isolation. Choosing a lower-impact option is easier when that option is available, affordable and supported by infrastructure. Individual responsibility and systemic change are therefore not opposing ideas. They influence one another.

The same is true in conservation.

Protecting one pollinator species may require understanding agriculture, habitat connectivity, pesticide use, flowering resources, climate and local economics. The organism cannot be separated from the system in which it lives.

Human behaviour works in much the same way.

When we understand the systems surrounding our decisions, we become better equipped to decide where individual action is useful and where broader structural change is necessary.
