Our Living Forest
Four hectares in Costa Rica and what they mean for Bhramari
On the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, our family shares responsibility for approximately four hectares of tropical rainforest.
In global conservation terms, four hectares are not enormous.
We think it is important to say that clearly.
Bhramari did not purchase a vast reserve, and we do not want to turn a family forest into a larger conservation claim than it is.
What makes this place important to us is something different.
It is real.
The forest exists independently of Bhramari. Its trees, insects, fungi, birds and other organisms were there before our project had a name. By keeping the land forested, our family helps preserve an existing piece of tropical habitat rather than attempting to recreate one after it has disappeared.
For Tobi and me, spending time in this landscape gradually changed conservation from something we studied into something we could observe directly.
Biology gives us concepts such as pollination, decomposition, succession, competition and ecological networks.
The forest gives those concepts a place.
A flower visited by a small bee becomes pollination happening in front of us.
A fruit carried away by an animal becomes seed dispersal.
A fallen tree covered in fungi becomes decomposition.
A young plant growing within an opening in the canopy becomes regeneration.
None of these observations is extraordinary from a scientific perspective.
That is exactly why they matter.
They are the ordinary processes through which ecosystems continue to exist.
The more time we spent around tropical forests and stingless bees, the more interested we became in these relationships.
It also changed our idea of what conservation needs to look like.
There is often a desire to do something visible: plant trees, build structures, introduce species or create a project that can easily be photographed and communicated.
Sometimes those interventions are valuable.
But an existing forest does not necessarily need us to redesign it.
Often it needs protection from the pressures that would otherwise remove or simplify it.
This is one of the principles that now influences Bhramari.
Protect first. Understand second. Intervene where there is a reason to do so.
The forest also gives us an opportunity to keep learning.
Over time, we would like to document more of the biodiversity that occurs there. Plant inventories could help us understand vegetation. Pollinator observations could reveal which insects visit particular flowers. Camera traps could document mammals moving through the landscape, while acoustic monitoring could provide information about birds, insects and other animals that are difficult to observe directly.
Stingless bees are of particular interest to us.
Costa Rica contains a rich diversity of these social pollinators, and observing which species occur in and around the forest, where they forage and how they interact with vegetation could contribute to our broader work with Bhramari.
This does not mean turning the forest into a laboratory in which everything needs to be measured.
Some areas may simply remain undisturbed.
Monitoring should help us understand the ecosystem rather than becoming a reason to interfere with it.
Over time, these observations can become part of our Field Notes and future scientific work. They can also allow people following Bhramari to see conservation as a process rather than a finished result.
There will be species we cannot identify.
Questions we cannot immediately answer.
Seasonal changes we only understand after observing them repeatedly.
That is part of biology.
The forest does not need to be completely understood before it deserves protection.
In fact, the amount we still do not know is another reason to protect it.
For Bhramari, these four hectares therefore represent both a beginning and a reference point.
They remind us that before creating biodiversity somewhere else, we should recognize the biodiversity that is already present.
Before speaking about restoration, we should understand the value of avoiding destruction.
And before presenting conservation as something complicated or distant, we should remember that sometimes it begins with a very straightforward decision:
to leave enough space for life to continue.
Four hectares will not protect the world's tropical forests.
But conservation has never made the organisms living within a habitat less dependent on that particular place simply because the area appears small on a map.
For the tree growing there, the bee nesting in a cavity, the fungus decomposing fallen wood or the animal moving through the vegetation, this forest is not a conservation statistic.
It is habitat.
And our responsibility is simply to give it the opportunity to remain one.
